Movie: "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan

Yall, this movie is wonderful. Most of the time I love anything that has Jimmy Stewart in it, and he did not fail me in this one! I would have to say that it is right up there with "It's a Wonderful Life" for me. I really liked "Shenandoah" also though.. ("It's a Wonderful Life" still wins. Christmas-anything wins.)

The plotline will catch any of you hopeless romantics, like me: A clerk (Stewart) in a store in Belgium has a pen pal that he gets serious with, and he falls in love with her. On the other side of the post office box, the lady (Sullivan) has just got a job as a saleswoman at the same store, and neither of them know that they are actually seeing each other day in and day out. The two go through arguments after arguments, until the day that they are supposed to meet in a restaurant..

Sound familiar to you? Well have you seen "You've Got Mail"?

The story lines are very similar because the latter is based off of "The Shop Around the Corner"!
It is SO good.. Definitely watch it.

TV Show: "Lost"

(Whole series available on Netflix!)

This show.. It is so addicting. I am not usually one to care about survival on an island stories, but this one.. it is so intriguing. I am not finished with it yet-- I'm in the 4th season, but the plot line weaves a web that connects everyone and everything, and it is so amazing and cool and confusing and exciting and.. wow.

Book(s): The Lauren Holbrook Series by Erynn Mangum

This series is loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma. Mangum is such a witty writer; I love the quick humor she uses. She is a Christian fiction writer, and her blog is an enjoyable read! I have read all of her books except for the two latest ones, including the "Maya Davis Series" which is fantastic too.

I think I want to go back and re-read them now.. Check out her website and read her blog!

Lastly for today,

Blog: Mrs. Gore's Diary

If you read blogs, click on this link and follow her blog. She is such an inspiring, funny, and REAL author. She is just like you and me, but she makes our crazy lives come to life on the screen with such beautiful language. Some of her posts will make you just boo-hoo.

My favorite of her posts is "Magic Mike Who?" (<--- Read it here)

Click on this link and follow her page, you WON'T regret it! :)

Thanks for reading today's edition of Monday's Media! Let me know what your favorites are, or what you think about any of these! Have a fantastic week!

Wednesday's Word: 8/21/13 "Scarlet Letters"

Logo Design by FlamingText.com

I'd like to share with you something that I have been studying in my Bible study, Malachi: a love that never lets go, by Lisa Harper. I have thoroughly enjoyed this study thus far, and I want to share a short snippet with you that touched my heart!

Lisa begins a section by stating that once when she was teaching on Malachi at her church, she shared a video clip of Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter in which Hester wore a red letter "A" around her neck.

Hester Prynne had had a short relationship with the pastor in town, which left her unmarried and pregnant.

{sidenote} when I think of this story, I have close friends and a very close family member who have been in this same situation (not particularly with a pastor), and I know the pain associated with this type of situation. Could you imagine the guilt Hester had, the inner disdain/joy she may have been experiencing over the birth of her child, and the humiliating emotions she held when people found out?

Anyway, after Lisa showed the clip she explained in the book that she
"pulled out a box filled with lots of big red letter on lanyards. I solemnly told the class what each letter stood for: S represented sexual sin; P represented pride; U represented unforgiveness; H represented hypocrisy; and I represented idolatry. After explaining what the letters stood for, I hung one of each from my neck. Then I just stood there quietly for a minute." (p22-23)
Wow.. could you imagine the thick silence in that room? I can't.

She asks which of those letters would apply to me.. Well, many of them represent me at different times, but at the time of doing this study, it was definitely Idolatry.

No, there are no golden idols on my mantle nor do I sit outside and worship the hot summer sun.

My idols are Facebook.. Pinterest.. food..  Lost.. sometimes even my beautiful sweet family is my idol.

because unfortunately, I allow all of them sometimes to come before my God.

The God who thought of me and spun me into existence.. the God who gave me wonderful parents to raise me.. The God who placed the man I love in my life, and eventually gave me my sweet precious son, Andrew.. The God who blesses me abundantly with riches that I do not even deserve, that allow me to get on Facebook and Pinterest.. The God who blesses me so that I never miss a meal.

The God who gave me JESUS, the greatest of all my blessings.

Yes, I have scarlet letters, I have hidden sins that may not shine through to the world; however, they may be blocking God's light from shining through.

However, she continues further by adding how differently we would live and act if we had to wear our sins around our necks for all to see.
"We probably wouldn't turn up our noses at other sinners, pretending that our wrongdoings were somehow less rotten. We wouldn't be so quick to forget our tendency to wander away from God like the Israelites... And how, if we had to "wear" our sin where everyone could see it, we wouldn't need to be reminded of our desperate need for God's mercy." (23)
The only thing that keeps us on this earth, and that will keep us from the flames of Hell is the faithful love and mercy of God.

Lamentations 3:22-23 reads:
"Because of the LORD's faithful love, we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! I say; The LORD is my portion therefore I will put my hope in Him."

Thank you dear Lord for your mercies that are new each morning.

Tasty Tuesday: 8/20/13

Hi yall! I am glad you decided to come back today!

Today I want to share a recipe with you that I tried this weekend (twice, actually. It was really good. ha) that I found on the Six Sisters' Stuff blog. It's called Slow Cooker Cheesy Chicken Quesadillas.

I love any recipe that has the words, "slow cooker," "cheesy," "chicken," or "quesadillas" in it.

So basically I REALLY loved this one. :)

Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:
-- 4 frozen chicken breasts
-- 1 bell pepper (I did half green, half red) sliced
-- 1 14 oz can of rotel
-- 1 small can of green chilies (4 oz)
-- 1 8 oz package of cream cheese
-- flour tortillas
-- 1 (2 cup) package of fiesta blend shredded cheese (or whichever you'd like!)
-- olive oil

Spray your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Place your chicken breasts in the slow cooker. Dump in the diced tomatoes, bell peppers, green chilies, and cream cheese. Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook for 6-8 hours on LOW o 3-4 hours on HIGH. Once the chicken is cooked, take the chicken out and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker (mix it in and it will absorb some of the juices so it's not so runny) and keep warm until ready to make quesadillas (I did for about 30 minutes).

To make quesadillas, heat a skillet over medium heat. Top half of each tortilla with cheese and a scoop of the chicken mixture (I found it worked best to use a slotted spoon so that I got rid of as much as the juice as possible). Fold the tortilla over and press down. Lightly brush melted butter (or olive oil) on both sides. Cook two filled tortillas at a time (3-4 minutes each; until they are golden brown), turning once.

Top with sour cream, salsa, or guacamole-- whatever you like! Enjoy! (4 servings)

If you love the recipe as much as I did, download and cut out the printable version below!

Let me know how it went over with your family, and if you made any yummy modifications! :)

Monday's Media: 8/19/13

Logo Design by FlamingText.com

Hey there!

So this is my first edition of Monday's Media, so let me tell you how Monday's will roll around here..

I will share my opinions on what song, book, video, movie etc. (media) is rocking right now, or is a favorite of mine!

Now, these will be my opinions, obviously, and they may not quite line up with yours. It happens, and it will be okay. :) I would LOVE to read your comments below the post regarding my choices!

So, to begin:

Song:
Hurricane, by Natalie Grant (2013)
This song is so powerful! I feel so loved and safe when I think of the lyrics..

"There's a place, there's a place you can run
When you fall, and it's all come undone
You'll be safe in the raging storm
So just let go
'Cause you are held in His arms"

Quite moving..

How amazing it is to know that wherever we are in life, whatever crazy situation life has led us to, God is always here, and we can just let go of everything and fall into His arms. What a blessing!

Book:
Someday, Someday, Maybe, by Lauren Graham

This book.. Oh, I am in LOVE. I read it in one night. It made me want to go to New York and be an actress, and I have never had any dream of the sort....

besides wanting to live in New York.

But the cover, doesn't that just scream, "Come to New York, buy a red coat, and ride your bike down a beautifully lit bridge.".... that's what I'm hearing.

Lauren Graham is possibly my favorite actress.. you may know her from Gilmore Girls or Parenthood.. those are my favorites. Basically, I want to be her best friend. So, when I found out she had a book, AND THAT IT IS GOING TO BE A TV SERIES, I almost had a panic attack.

It's a must read, fo sho.

and lastly for this first edition of Monday's Media,
Movie: Pitch Perfect

Yes, readers, I know that I could have chosen a more "refined" movie for this first edition, but.. it's my opinion. :)

I love this movie. My love may greatly be attributed to my passion of acapella music, but that doesn't matter. Minus the gross vomit scenes, this movie makes me want to be in an acapella group so badly. I believe that level of persuasion adds to the greatness of the movie.

I mean, when I watched "The Godfather" I didn't want to join the mafia.. When I watched "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," I didn't want to move out west. Catch my drift?

One of my favorite scenes:

Thank you for reading this post! There will be a variety of topics on Mondays, not just these.. You will find TV shows, my favorite blog posts, articles, and much more!

Please comment with what you'd like to see, or what your opinions are! I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks so much, Lyndsey

Friday's Finds: 8/23/13

Logo Design by FlamingText.com
Logo Design by FlamingText.com

This Friday's Finds is going to unfortunately be a bit on the short side.

I have been a bit busy!

However, I want to share a couple of things that Charles and I have worked on lately, and a sneak peek of what I am going to show y'all next Friday-- we are still working on it!

A few months ago one of my friends was selling window panes for very cheap, so we bought one.

Now it hangs in our living room as a big photo display.

We bought the 97 cent plastic magnetic frames at Walmart and hot glued them on it so that we can change the oictures out as we desire! We really like it!

We go thrifting often, but I just didn't have enough time to go through all of our finds tonight to share with you all, so I am going to pull out an old one because of its easy access! Ha

Charles and I about a year ago cut up some squares of wood and modge-podged them and added letters to each block for a decoration for Andrew's nursery. We were really pleased with how they turned out!

So I know that to post was pretty lame and boring, but we have been working hard on what we will show you next Friday (we have been trying to get it done by today).

We are actually in the process of revamping all of our bedroom furniture, which will most definitely be featured on Friday's Finds!

Here is a sneak peek of what's to come:

I'm excited! :)

Let me know what you're working on or what your thrifty inspiration is!

Have a great weekend, and thanks so much for tuning in to my first week of my new blog! You're the best! :)
